This is two inches of 8K "Easy Repair" gold solder; convenient wire shape; Specially formulated to work with gold fill, or use for all gold jewelry repairs. For jewelers and crafts people with experience with soldering precious metals; use with our gold filled bezel; factory tested, this alloy was a collaboration with a USA refinery and one of the largest USA manufactuers of gold filled jewelery and has never been available to the public for sale before. Made from 100% recycled precious metals. This solder is cadmium and lead free, legal in California; 2" weighs about 0.20dwt.

Metallurgy is the process of working metal into artifacts and was one of the first applied sciences.

Copper is one of the first metals discovered and worked by man, but was mostly worked into ornament being too soft for tools. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc and zinc was a difficult metal to pin down. So making brass was a hit and miss project. It was pursued by people of many cultures through the ages and sometimes done successfully.

In 1746 a German scientist identified zinc and determined its properties. The process for combining metallic copper and zinc to make brass was patented in England in 1781.

Today about 90% of brass on the market is recycled.

These earrings are made of a core of thick brass wire hammered and threaded with old African brass heishi (handmade) and tiny brass cylinders. They're hung on goldfill wire hooks that I formed and hammered.

These two pieces are hand fabricated from scratch....I alloyed the metal, poured the ingots, drew the wire, rolled the sheet, punched and dapped eight discs, soldered the eight dapped domes into spheres, soldered the tapped tubing into two of the spheres, and for the short and stubby 'cochlear', I depletion gilded the surface....which required 10 heatings to red heat followed by pickling. Then it was hand-burnished using agate burnishers. The "industrial' was not depletion gilded and was polished with machine buffs.
